Makarska

Makarska, located in the heart of the Makarska Riviera, has historically been the administrative, political, economic, cultural, and educational center of the region. Since the mid-20th century, it has also become one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Croatian coast.
Today, Makarska is a vibrant town with over 13,000 residents. It includes charming villages such as Veliko Brdo, Puharići, Kotišina, and Makar, nestled at the foot of the magnificent Biokovo Mountain. The town’s name, Makarska, originates from Makar, highlighting the historical significance of this area.
Makarska is synonymous with the perfect vacation, thanks to its natural beauty, rich history, and the hospitality of its locals. It is famous for its 2-kilometer-long pebble beach, lined with pine trees. Alongside the promenade, visitors can find top-quality hotels, restaurants offering local gastronomic specialties, and a variety of activities for both children and adults.
Nestled at the base of Mount Biokovo, the town enjoys a favorable blend of Mediterranean and mountain climates. Makarska basks in more than 2,750 hours of sunshine annually, with temperatures exceeding 20°C from May to October. Its warm, crystal-clear waters, ideal for swimming, remain pleasant until November.

What To Do

Something
for Everyone

Makarska’s natural harbor, protected by the peninsulas of Sveti Petar and Osejava, serves as a safe haven for sailboats, yachts, and excursion boats. It is connected year-round by a ferry line to the island of Brač, with additional summer connections to other islands, enabling visitors to explore the stunning nearby destinations.
Makarska is also a hub of cultural heritage. The Franciscan Monastery, with over 500 years of history, houses the Malacological Museum, which features a unique collection of seashells. In the town center, at Kačić Square, you can visit the 18th-century Church of St. Mark. Other nearby attractions include the Town Library, the Gojak Gallery, and the Church of St. Philip.
Mount Biokovo, with its highest peak Sveti Jure (1762 m), offers breathtaking views, hiking trails, and cycling routes. The Biokovo Botanical Garden Kotišina is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts, while adrenaline seekers can enjoy paragliding, hiking, or cycling.
Makarska is well-connected to major transportation hubs in Dalmatia, making it an easily accessible destination for visitors.
